This week we were asked to Google ourselves which is something I have never done before. The first thing that popped up when I typed my name into Google was my personal Instagram profile (I thought that I had made my account private!). Luckily I don't post anything on Instagram that I would wish to hide, but this is still a reminder to be mindful of my online privacy settings. Some other websites that popped up were my Facebook (which is private), my class Twitter account and my Pinterest account. Based on what I found when I Googled myself, I believe that I have a positive digital footprint. Everything that I found about myself online I would feel comfortable sharing with family, friends and colleagues.
This course taught me about the rights and responsibilities of digital citizens, which is information that I have taken away and will use in my everyday life. During this course I had identified my top three rights and responsibilities as being the right to privacy, the responsibility to cite works used and the responsibility to report inappropriate use. As a digital citizen I will continue to respect the online privacy of others as well as maintain my own online privacy, I will continue to cite works used during my studies and I will make sure to report any inappropriate use of digital tools that I witness. If I continue to act responsibly in the digital world and leave a positive digital footprint through my identified rights and responsibilities, I will hopefully encourage the people around me to do the same.
Thanks for reading!

Report & Reflection (Week 11)
Reflecting on Podcasts:
Check out my blog post about podcasts below to find out how I enjoyed using SoundCloud for the first time this week. As I mentioned, I really enjoyed using SoundCloud but don't know when I would have the opportunity to use it again in the future. Therefore, I haven't included on my PLE diagram. If you have the need to create a podcast I would highly suggest using SoundCloud as it was extremely user friendly.
Connecting Feedly to the Course:
This week I found an article on my Feedly reader called How to Build Your Brand Name Through Social Media: A Primer. This article came from the Entrepreneur, which is a website I would suggest all young business professionals subscribe to on Feedly. I think that this article is very useful and relevant to this course because in this day and age many job recruiters are looking to social media to find potential applicants. Therefore, we must be cautious of the way we present ourselves online and of our security settings if we don't want information to be made available to mass audiences, such as potential employers.

PODCAST
This week's hands on activities revolved around using podcasts. At first I was nervous to begin making a podcast because I assumed that it would be very difficult and time consuming, however this was not the case. I chose to use SoundCloud because I had heard of the website before (I had never used it) and within minutes I was creating my first podcast. The website was extremely simple to use and it did not take much time at all. The website allows you to record yourself and listen to it over and over again, while making changes and re-recording yourself, until you have the podcast the way you would like it. Once the podcast is completed you simply press share and it allows you to title the podcast and enter a description. You can also chose whether or not you want your podcast to be private. I chose to make a public podcast so I could share it below with all of my classmates.
Although I was very impressed with SoundCloud I don't know where I would include it on my PLE diagram. I can't see myself using SoundCloud at work or in my personal life. I would maybe put it under my school related digital tools but even then I don't know if it would every come in handy. Whenever we do class presentations at school we are always speaking in front of the class we are never asked to prerecord our presentations. It would also be difficult for the entire class to hear the podcast because I noticed that it was very quiet, and I had to turn the volume up on my computer just so I could hear it myself. Nonetheless, I am very happy that I had the chance to explore SoundCloud and would enjoy the chance to use it sometime again in the future.
Until next time,
Rebecca

Report & Reflection (Week 10)
This week's hands on activities revolved around using slide show presentation tools. I chose to explore Prezi as I have already had some experience using this digital tool. I really enjoy using Prezi for classroom presentations as I find the layout more interesting than a regular power point presentation. Prezi also makes it more difficult to put a lot of text onto one slide which is ideal for an effective slide show presentation. However, I was having a few issues with Prezi as I was creating this week's side show. I was finding it difficult to format the bubbles and the arrows the way I wanted them, and Prezi wasn't allowing me to insert a link without automatically inserting the entire YouTube video into my slide show. This could be very challenging if you are trying to cite your works used and you are unable to paste the link to a video into your presentation. I created the Prezi below on copyright infringement which was also a large part of this week's hands on activities.
This week we learned how to filter Google for images that are free to use, share or modify, even commercially. I did not know that you could choose such filters in Google's advanced settings but I found it very useful and will definitely use this going forward in my education. I will also add Prezi to my PLE diagram because after exploring it some more I realized what a unique slide show presentation tool it is. I will place Prezi under my school related digital tools as I will use it for my upcoming classroom presentations. Lastly, we explored ways to avoid copyright infringement such as producing your own images. We have already had the opportunity to create our own images such as the PLE diagrams and the Popplet maps. This week I choose to make my own image using an online digital tool called WordItOut. Check out the word cloud I made below using the words from this week's blog post.
Don't forget to cite your own images as well!
Until next week,
Rebecca

Report & Reflection (Week 9)
This week's hands on activities revolved around exploring VoiceThread and analyzing a technolgy use scenario from the textbook. As I have already posted my thoughts on these two activities below I would like to share this week's Feedly reader discoveries. I started following a new site called Entrepreneur and found this article called 8 of the Week's Best Business Tweets. It wasn't so much an article as it was a compilation of Tweets, however I really enjoyed it as an aspiring business woman. It made me realize that one of the reasons I enjoy using Twitter so much is that it limits that number of characters per tweet. This might be a downfall to many people, however I feel like it forces you to condense your thoughts and only share the most important information. It also makes it really quick and easy for other users to scroll through their news feed and just glimpse at all of the tweets and gather the important information. If you are in a business program at Brock or any other University I would highly suggest subscribing to Entrepreneur on Feedly as they post a lot of really useful and educational articles.
I hope you enjoy!

Technology Use Scenario
Scenario #14: Mr. Hutchinson wants to keep his students' parents aware of classroom activities. He remembers hearing about using Twitter posts at a technology conference. After doing some research, Mr. Hutchinson finds both positive and negative viewpoints related to using Twitter in the classroom. He believes that for what he wants to do - inform parents of their child's daily work - these posts would be appropriate. Before setting one up, however, he consults with the principal and technology support person to see if there are any legal issues. Both say that what he wants to do is perfectly okay. Mr. Hutchinson then sets up a professional Twitter account and informs his students and parents about where to find the information. Is social media a good way to share information?
I believe that Mr. Hutchinson acted appropriately when using social media to share information. He was not sure if there would be any legal or technical issues, therefore he consulted the principal and technology support person before going ahead and setting up the Twitter account. It was also noted that he set up a professional Twitter account and informed the students and parents about where to access the information if they chose to do so. This is important because it shows that Mr. Hutchinson did not force information upon the students and their parents. It would have been inappropriate if Mr. Hutchinson went ahead and set up a Twitter account without telling the students and parents, and then started following them and sending them messages without their consent. I believe that social is a good way to share information if both parties involved agree to having the information shared and it is not one party forcing information onto another.
Let me know if you agree!
